About Us

The Safety, Health and Environmental Campus Association of South Africa (SHECASA) is a tertiary association focused on Occupational Health, Safety and Environmental Management.

A number of Tertiary Institutions in South Africa has informally been in contact with one another in an attempt to share information and expertise in the application and management of the National Laws governing Occupational Health and Safety and Environmental Management. Consensus amongst Tertiary Institutions is that the application of these Laws at a Tertiary Institution is of a unique nature due to the Academic Environment. The Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University and Tshwane University of Technology have jointly recognized the need to formalize networking between Tertiary Institutions. Subsequently all Tertiary Institutions of South Africa were invited to attend a workshop to discuss the relevance of establishing a formal Association during 2011. The workshop was attended by all Tertiary Institutions invited and it was unanimously agreed that an Association of this nature would be in the best interest of all Tertiary Institutions in South Africa, with a possibility of extending it to other African and International Countries in future. At this meeting the name SHECASA has also been adopted.

At the first official meeting of the members of SHECASA, on 19 July 2012 at The Tshwane University of Technology, an Executive Committee has been elected. The Vision, Mission and Objectives of the Association as well as the Constitution have also been adopted. The Executive Committee had meetings in 2013 and early in 2014 to draft an action plan and determine the way forward. The inaugural SHECASA conference took place on the 28th of August 2014 at the University of Cape Town. SHECASA will act solely in the best interest of Tertiary Institutions and its endeavour is directly associated with the promotion of the best interest of all Vice Chancellors (OHASA Section 16(1) appointees). The support of Vice Chancellors, Management and staff of Tertiary Institutions are of paramount importance to the success of SHECASA.
